I need help planning a side-trip to the Grand Canyon and Hoover Dam.?

My friends and are traveling to Las Vegas next week for 4 days. We would like to take a day trip to the Grand Canyon/Hoover Dam. What is the best and economical way of planning this? Will it be cheaper to rent a car? Should we stick to a tour (tour bus)? Any suggestions and advice is greatly appreciated :)
