In australia, what can be considered "valid" id when clubbing, and buying alcohol?

i really wanted to know... because i'm turning 18 in about a week (woo hoo FINALLY!!) and have found that my friends have said that their learner's permits haven't been a good enough source of id. (and they have your date of birth too, what's with that?)
